Traditional and Alternative Approaches to the Mezzotint

Mezzotint is a non-acid intaglio technique that permits a wide range of tonal values and textural effects. Once shunned for its association with reproductive printmaking, the mezzotint is attracting increasing attention due to its unequaled flair for rendering deep blacks, brilliant highlights, and rich surface qualities. In this workshop, you will be introduced to the history and principles of the traditional processes, and then explore some exciting new variations. After working on rocked plates, you will experiment with alternative methods such as sandblasting, sandpaper, roulettes, and drypoint.
